How to track student practice between lessons.
"How did the practice go?" gets a shrug, and the lesson starts with detective work. The fix is not a fancier question — it is a number both of you can see.
Log it in the lesson, not after it
Practice time is logged against the student as minutes per session, and the moment that survives is the lesson itself: ask, listen, type the number while they are sitting there. Thirty seconds, because anything that takes longer becomes a Sunday-night backlog and then becomes nothing.
One thing this is not: students logging their own time. Lesson Lineup has no student login, so there is no practice diary a student keeps — there is a record the teacher keeps. That sounds like a limitation until the alternative arrives: a term of enthusiastic fiction, diligently entered by a nine-year-old.
Read the trend, not the week
One bad week means nothing; six thinning weeks mean the piece is too hard, the schedule changed, or the interest is going. Each student's tab folds the sessions into three figures — days practiced this week, days in the last thirty, and an average a day — so the slow fade is visible while there is still something to do about it.
Bring the number to the lesson
The figures earn their keep in two conversations. With the student: "three days most weeks, zero this one — what happened Tuesday?" With the parent: progress discussed against the log rather than against a feeling. The repertoire list sits on the same record with each piece's status, so "practised four days and the piece still isn't moving" points at the assignment, not the child.
And when it matters on paper — an exam entry, a handover, a term review — practice history exports as CSV with the rest of the reports.

Can students log their own practice in Lesson Lineup?
No. Lesson Lineup has no student or parent portal, so there is no login a student could use. The teacher logs practice time against the student, usually in the lesson itself.
What does Lesson Lineup show per student?
Days practiced this week, days practiced in the last thirty, and an average per day, worked out from the logged sessions — plus the per-session history underneath.
Can I export practice history?
Yes. Practice is one of the thirteen report types and exports as CSV, alongside repertoire, attendance and the money reports.
